Mykonos and Delos

Mykonos and its sister Delos islands are renowned for their unique beauty and history.

Mykonos has been one of Europe's most high-profile summer destinations for several decades now attracting those looking for pristine beaches, crystal-clear water and breathtaking panoramic views. It also has the not-completely undeserved reputation of being the playground for the "rich and famous" and is consistently ranked high for its vibrant, culturally diverse nightlife. Hollywood movie stars, musicians, fashion models, sports stars and other celebrities as well as politicians and world-leaders flock to the island every summer.

The Membrane Protein Frontiers Workshop takes place between May 28th and June 2nd, before the massive tourist influx that begins in late June so that our participants will be able to enjoy a much less crowded, and cheaper, Mykonos than one might expect judging by reputation alone.

Populated for the last five thousand years, and due to its central Aegian location, Delos was a crossroads of the sea-faring inhabitants of Europe, West Asia and North Africa and thrived as a center of commerce and culture between 100 and 900 AD. Many of the ancient houses of Delos are preserved in their entirety (minus roof), making it one of only a handful of places on the planet where one can walk on the perfectly preserved cobblestone streets of a standing ancient city. "Ruins" is not a word that accurately describes the city of Delos

During our guided tour to Delos (a 20 minute boat ride from Mykonos harbor) we will be able to peek into houses with their living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens still intact, and see elaborate mosaic floors, sculptures and other artwork. It is an immersive and unforgettable experience and many who visit this revered island return again and again.
